Fatou Mass Jobe Nije, the minister of Tourism and Culture for Gambia, and her delegation, continued her pre-season tour of tourism facilities in the country Tuesday with a visit to Makasutu Culture Forest in Kembujeh, West Coast Region.

Upon arrival at Makasutu, Fatou Mass Jobe-Njie and delegation were taken on a tour of the eco-tourism facility by its managing director.

Facilities available include floating house, jungle house and stilted house among other things.

The houses are built on top of the river, which is about one-and-half meter deep and surrounded by mangroves. According to Williams, Makasutu Culture Forest was designed according to the environment to make any visitor to this place feel the real nature.

The managing director also narrated how work started in the forest over 20 years ago, till it was transformed into what it is today. Their activities include proper Gambian cooking, palm wine tapping, and bird watching, among other fulltime cultural activities.

The minister and her delegation then sailed from Makasutu to Sitanunku in Upper Niumi through a boat named the Blue Albatross Gambia to visit the Sutununku Lodge in the North Bank of the River Gambia, about an hour sail from Makasutu.

The clean and colourful lodge was founded in 2010 and since then has been witnessing lots of activities like fishing, tackle and bait, bird watching walks with guides, access to Dog Island which is opposite the camp, visiting and transporting to local Sitanunku village.

Among the facilities in use are shore angling and sportive canoe fishing, local pirogue boat, among other activities.

To round up the tour of the clean and friendly lodge, the managing director, Marcel Hendrickx, who is also the vice chairman of GHA and Tourism Marketing Committee Working with Authority and World Bank introduced minister Jobe-Njie and entourage round the wonderful and mouth-watering cuisines.

He thanked the minister and delegation for having time to check on Sutununku Lodge to know how well prepared they are for the tourism season.

Our blog, Eco Adventure Travel has recently been recommended by travel site Simonseeks. Simonseeks.com was set up by entrepreneur Simon Nixon, creator of Moneysupermarket.com.  The site offers expert recommendations on everything from Madrid Hotels to New York restaurants.  Users can also find inspirational travel guides from enthusiasts and travel professionals and a facility to check availability and book hotels, flights and car hire without having to leave the site!

Multiple guides focus on eco and adventure travel, some of the most notable being Kyley Chapman’s guide to the, famously ecofriendly, country of Costa Rica. Kyley stayed at a bio-dynamic, herbal estate and gives some great tips for things to do around the area of La Fortuna, where I had a wonderful vacation (you can read about my travels through La Fortuna elsewhere in this blog).

In ‘The empty country: Namibia’ travel writer Nicki Grihault uncovers a wild and remote haven where, according to one guide, ‘the desert is your newspaper’. Finally in ‘Saving Ankor’ travel writer Mark Stratton, talks about the havoc being wreaked on Cambodia’s famous ruins by mass tourism and how, with a bit of forethought, this wonder of the world can be enjoyed in a sustainable and responsible fashion.  What’s more anybody can submit a guide to Simonseeks!

Someone recommended I check out Ecopedia, which is a pretty cool website, giving you information on what actions, or products, are environmentally friendly, eco sensitive, carbon neutral, etc., so you can begin to live a less impactful life, regarding the environment. Check it out! (And no, that photo has nothing to do with the site – I just thought it was cool).

Photography, Travel, and my Canon Lens Recommendations

August 19, 2009
Canon EOS 40D
Image via Wikipedia

One of my greatest joys in life is photography. I bought an SLR camera when my son was born in 2005. That first camera was a used Canon Rebel XT, which I purchased on Ebay, and I began taking baby photographs as well as travel photographs. I then bought a Canon 30D on Ebay, which I have been shooting with since.

You can see all my photographs at http://www.flickr.com/sets/robertmiller

The real secret, to camera hardware is that it’s all about the lenses, not the camera body. Of course, all everyone wants to know is “what kind of camera do you have?” but, although the cameras may change constantly, the lenses can be in use for years and deliver high quality shots. (This took a while to learn).

I know I will be upgrading my Canon 30D very soon. Another photographer told me that the Canon 40D is actually better than the Canon 50D and better than the (original) Canon 5D, (now replaced by the Canon 5D Mark II.

I’ve purchased lenses from Costco, Amazon, Adorama, J&R Camera, and B&H Camera. The following are my favorites:

Ecotourism Resources

July 13, 2009

There is a rapidly growing trend in travel and tourism today toward responsible, ecologically aware traveling. This type of travel can be characterized as the exact opposite of a Club Med vacation. GORP offers up a good list of the principles of EcoTourism. It doesn’t mean you have to be a Greenpeace eco-warrior, but just have a love for the natural state of the planet. The WWW is a primary forum for the dissemination of eco-info about ecologically inspired eco-journeys. By the time you are done reading this, we guarantee you will be eco-overloaded.
It should be noted that many sites related to ecotourism have very similar names and are easily eco-confused. For example, recently there has been some turmoil regarding the very closely named Green Travel and the Green Travel Network. Green Travel is a long-running not-for-profit service that is an exceptionally comprehensive forum (listserv, archive and website) for “ecotourism practitioners and consumers,” whereas the Green Travel Network is an excellent, brand-new commercial ecotourism and adventure travel website. Though the two services couldn’t be more different, it is easy to confuse them because of the similar names.
Excellent Eco-Sites
Green Culture is a good commercial ecotourism site that has an extensive list of ecotourism links.
Planet’s Eco Travels in Latin America is a well-respected and very in-depth site about travel to Latin America. Many consider Planeta the foremost Net site for people interested in ecotourism.
Ecotourism Explorer is a non-profit site for the exploration of ecotourism for researchers, conservationists and businesspeople. The Eco-Travelers page contains excellent background info and helpful hints on how to choose a good tour operator.
The Ecotravel Center is a slick, not-for-profit site dedicated to promoting and educating people about ecotourism. Good links and an active bulletin board.
Ecotourism Research and Other Adventures is aimed primarily at ecological researchers and other eco-professionals.
The Eco-Source is updated regularly with the latest “information and services about today’s ecological issues.”
“Green” Travel Destinations
Alaska is a popular eco-destination (because hardly anyone lives there). Ecotourism in Alaska is a great resource for travelers to the last great wilderness in America.
Australia has a strong eco-travel following. The International Center for Ecotourism Research is located there.
The Specialty Travel Index has a great list of eco-links sorted by country and region.
By now, you probably don’t want to see “eco” precede any more words. But if it’s more eco-related (sorry) info you seek, each of the above sites has lists of links to fill any eco-gaps.

Is there such thing as “positive tourism”?

Eco-tourism in Africa – Is There Such a Thing As Positive Tourism?

Many would argue the ill effects tourism can have on natural habitats and the animals themselves but the major argument for positive tourism is sustainable tourism – sharing the benefits of wildlife and socioeconomic development through the promotion of tourism. The objective of those working in the African travel industry should be to bring about sustainable economic development by way of eco-tourism, which is said to be the fastest growing industry in the world! Poverty and ineffective land use can be addressed with the help of tourism opportunities like African safaris, adventure holidays and fair trade travel.

Planning a vacation to Maui

How to Find the Perfect Maui Vacation Package for You
Are you interested in taking a trip to Maui in the near future? If you are, have you already started making your travel arrangements? If you have yet to do so, you are urged to examine Maui vacation packages. Not only can a Maui vacation package save you money, but it can also make booking your Maui vacation reservations easier.
As you likely already know, vacation packages are when you are able to make a number of your vacation reservations all at once. When it comes to Maui vacation packages, it is not uncommon to see airfare and overnight accommodations listed as part of the package. Depending on where you look, you may also be able to find additional arrangements or extras, such as a car rental or small entertainment packages; entertainment packages that may allow you to take a dinner cruise or enjoy a meal at a fine dining restaurant. In all honesty, what is included in a Maui vacation package will all depend on where you find that vacation package and who it is being offered through.
Speaking of finding Maui vacation packages, do you know where to look for them? With the popularity of making travel arrangements online at an all time high, you may have responded with the internet. Yes, you can buy a Maui vacation package online, from a number of different locations, but you should also be able to purchase one from one of your local travel agents. Whether you want to use online travel websites or your local travel agent is up to you, but it may be a good idea to quickly examine each. Examining all of your options will not only help you save the most money, but it will also help to ensure that you find the Maui vacation package that is perfect for your needs, as well as the needs of your traveling party.
If you already have an idea as to which area of Maui you would like to visit, you are urged to keep that area in mind. As it was mentioned above, Maui is a popular vacation destination. For that reason, it is possible to find a large number of Maui vacation packages; Maui vacation packages that focus on one particular area of the island. For instance, if you would like to vacation inland, you will want to look for vacation packages that allow you to do. Perhaps, this is most important with overnight accommodations. If you are looking to vacation inland, you will not want to purchase a vacation package that involves you staying at a beachfront vacation resort. The same can be said for if you would prefer to stay along the coast.
In short, knowing where to find a Maui vacation package is the first step in finding the perfect Maui vacation package for you and your traveling party. The next step involves knowing which area of Maui you would like to visit, as well as what type of travel arrangement you will need to make. Taking the time to thoroughly examine a number of Maui vacation packages, before actually purchasing one, is the best way to make sure that the Maui vacation package you choose is the one that is right for you.
