Scientific American Cruise “Evolution Emanation”, February/March 2008

June 27, 2008

After I posted about the Scientific American cruise to the Western Caribbean, someone told me about the Scientific American Panama Canal/Southern Caribbean cruise from February 27, to March 9, 2009.  (If this whole magazine thing doesn’t work out, SciAm can always work in the travel industry).

The theme is “Evolution Emanation”, and it looks to have another good lineup of speakers, including lectures in 20 subjects, including the following:

small bullet The History of Life on Earth

small bullet The Evolution of the Genetic Code

small bullet The Emergence of an Amino Acid “Alphabet”

Scientific American Science Lecture Cruise, December, 2008

June 27, 2008

I’m a reader of Scientific American magazine, and I note that they have, for the past few years, partnered with insight cruises, to have a science cruise, with themed lectures on board.  (As though there aren’t enough things to do onboard a cruise ship, now you have to attend class also?).

The website is here, but the lineup of speakers, which includes NPR’s Ira Flatow, is below:

Ira Flatow
Host, Science Friday

Howard Bluestein, Ph.D.
Lera Boroditsky, Ph.D.
Alan M. Nathan, Ph.D.
Angelica de Oliveira-Costa, Ph.D.
Lisa Schwartz, M.D.
Max Tegmark, Ph.D.
Steven Woloshin, M.D.

Note that the James Randi Educational Foundation also has a similar cruise, to the Galapagos, which, at least to me, is a more interesting location than the Western Caribbean (although I loved loved loved scuba diving in Turks and Caicos).

Antigua, Guatemala

June 24, 2008

– from hexod.us

My mother was born in Guatemala, so that country is one I’ve visited often, and one I have a special place in my heart for.  Antigua is the most beautiful “city” in Guatemala, even though it’s more a preserved Spanish Colonial town.

Antigua has lots of sightseeing, but is also a place where Americans go to learn immersive Spanish.  I was surprised how many US Citizens I saw roaming around Antigua trying to practice Spanish with the poor local shop owners.

I found the following website guide to Antigua, which seems pretty good:

http://www.aroundantigua.com/

And there, I found the following information:

Antigua Guatemala, in the Department of Sacatepéquez, (Cerro de Hierba), may be the most outstanding and best-preserved colonial city in Spanish America. Tourists visit Antigua Guatemala every year from around the world to enjoy its natural beauty and historic monuments. The Spanish Colonial style permeates every part of the town: its houses, churches, squares, parks and ruins, also its traditions and folklore as well. Antigua is a city of charm and color where you can see and buy an overwhelming variety of attractive, handmade products that honor the traditions of generations of artisans.

Antigua’s temperate, climate and friendly inhabitants welcome visitors; the city has all the required services: sophisticated hotels, cafes and restaurants (with traditional or international menus), banks, stores, Internet cafés, travel agencies, Spanish-language schools and art galleries, all of the highest quality.

Antigua Guatemala Cathedral

Antigua sits in a Highland valley (1,500 meters) overlooked by the spectacular Agua Volcano (3,765 meters high). A little further away are two other volcanoes Acatenango and the always smoking, sometimes erupting, Fuego. The neighboring towns and villages include Ciudad Vieja, Jocotenango, San Juan El Obispo, Santa María de Jesús, San Bartolomé Milpas Altas and Santa Catalina Barahona. Each of these towns is worth a visit, even if only to view their historic colonial churches.

Antigua’s kitchen offers a palate-pleasing combination of traditional flavors, aromas and condiments that produce a delicious, nutritious and varied menu, something you cannot miss.

Antigua is also noted for its crafts: terracotta, ceramics, wrought iron, silver and jade jewelry, wooden sculptures, carved colonial-style furniture, a great variety of traditional costumes and weavings, figured stone, brass, jarcia, traditional toys and much more.

To find more information about hand-crafts in Guatemala, logon to the Art and Culture section.Reinforcing Antigua’s international flavor are more than 50 Spanish language-schools that host students from all around the world.

Antigua, sited in the Panchoy Valley, was designated ‘La Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala’ by the conquistadors in 1543 and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The festival of the town’s saint (Santiago or St James: Patron saint of the conquistadors) is celebrated July 25 th. After the conquest of the Maya by the Spanish, the races intermingled and their customs and traditions gave rise to a singular form of life, art and culture that is today reflected in every aspect of Antigua.

Places to Visit

Among the outstanding places to visit are:

The Plaza Mayor (Central Park)
The Palace of the Captain Generals
The Colonial Museum
The Historic Book Museum
The Cathedral
The Santiago Museum or Palacio del Ayuntamiento (the municipality)
The churches of La Merced and San Francisco
The Ruins of Nuestra Señora del Pilar ( Las Capuchinas )
The ruins of Santa Clara
The ruins of San Agustín

• Plaza Mayor (Central Park)

Visitors and locals alike enjoy the landscaped Plaza Mayor where you will find La Fuente de las Sirenas built in 1739 by Diego de Porres. Ringing the Central Park is La Catedral Metropolitana, El Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, El Portal del Comercio and El Palacio del Del Noble Ayuntamiento.

• Catedral Metropolitana

Catedral Metropolitana was built in 1543, the cathedral has been semi-destroyed by earthquakes through the years, but is now partly restored and preserves the beautiful colonial details of its Spanish architecture.

• El Palacio de los Capitanes

Palacio de los Capitanes Generales colonial building was for several centuries the palace of the Spanish Kings’ governors.

• Palacio del Noble Ayuntamiento

Palacio del Noble Ayuntamiento in colonial times (from 1743) was the headquarters for the Cabildo Español and later used as jail. Now located there are El Museo del Libro Antiguo, El Museo de Santiago and La Municipalidad de Antigua.

Another Angkor Wat Tour Provider

June 24, 2008

Purple Dragon Tours (love that name) is another tour provider that I found for Angkor Wat.  Their website has the following tours:

Purple Dragon’s Siem Reap packages offer great value and save you time and effort by arranging your choice of hotel, round trip airport transportation, and sightseeing with a personal English-speaking guide. You can always add extra nights and optional sightseeing if you wish.

Angkor Adventure In five days and four nights you get to see the best of Angkor, including magnificent treasures that very few visitors bother to see.

Ultimate Angkor If you are not the kind of “drive by tourist” who wants only a sample of Angkor Wat, why not stay longer? You will see the most famous of Angkor’s sites, of course. But we will also show you Cambodia’s magnificent countryside and some unbelievably spectacular temples where you will probably not see other visitors.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

June 24, 2008

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, Angkor Wat is one place I’d just love, love, love to visit.  It’s got everything I am looking for in travel – archeological significance, adventure, excitement, and is physically challenging.

One company I found has a four day Angkor Wat vacation – just short enough to get enough of a taste to want to go back. The itinerary is below:

Day 1
Transfer to Siem Reap * Ta Promh * Angor Wat

Transfer to Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport where you will board your flight for Siem Reap in Cambodia where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check in.

Have an afternoon visit Ta Promh and Angkor Wat temple until sunset. The temples of Angkor, built between the 7th and 11th c., represent one of the most impressive examples of man’s creativity.  From their dazzling temple structures the rulers of Angkor controlled an empire which expanded over six centuries to cover a region extending from present day Vietnam in the east, to the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the west. Explore the site of one of Asia’s most magnificent archeological ruins, the religious citadels of which were part of one of the most powerful kingdoms to rise in Southeast Asia

The estimated 100 temples, which constituted the foundation for Angkor’s administrative network, were made of wood (long since decayed) as construction of buildings from stone or brick was reserved solely for the gods.

Ta Prohm was built by King Jayavarman VII, 1181-1219.  There is hardly a temple anywhere else that shows so clearly the destructive power of the luxuriant tropical vegetation. When French archaeologists first discovered the site of the temple, they left the giant trees standing, even though their huge roots were coiling themselves like enormous snakes around the temple, penetrating its stonework and breaking it up.  But now some of these giants will have to be felled in order to save the temple.  Jayavarman VII has the monastery built as a residence for his mother, who had been deified as Prajnaparamita.  Ta Prohm looks rather like a smaller version of Angkor Thom.  B Angkor Palace Resort & Spa (4-star)

Day 2
South Gate of Angor Thom * Bayon * Phimeanakas * Elephant Terrace * Terrace of the Leper King

After breakfast visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom (WHS), Bayon, the Royal enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. The Bayon (WHS) is considered the single most outstanding monument of Khmer culture and also the most mysterious.  Constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1181 – 1201), this temple complex marks the exact center of Angkor Thom, making it the most venerated of the city’s temples.  Early archeologists (beginning in the mid 19th century) debated the identity of the great faces ornamenting the central tower with many believing the temple to be a shrine dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, others to Bahamas, while later specialists concluded (through the assistance of ancient Chinese records) that this was a Mahayana Buddhist temple.  The faces depicted however were not the Buddha, but rather the benevolent Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara.

The structure is staggering in its construction and most Angkor specialists agree that it is one of the finest examples of classical Khmer architecture.  Its third level is stunning – 49 towers adorned with 172 smiling faces of the omnipresent Avalokitesvara.  Sixteen chapels inside the structure indicate its religious importance while on the outer perimeter over 1,200 meters of exquisite bas-relief record scenes of daily life from 11th century Angkor.

Terrace of the Elephants (WHS), built by King Jayavarman VII, at the end of his reign, early 13th century.  The terrace has three platforms of different heights, to which five flights of steps lead up; the northern one was probably built later than the others.  The terrace takes its name from the outstanding depiction of elephants and of an elephant hunt, which takes up the major part of the frieze.

Terrace of the Leper-King, built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of his reign, early 13th century.  There is no path connecting the two terraces.  This one owes its name to a sculpture which used to stand here.  It was of King Yasovarman, 899-910, who originally founded Angkor and was popularly known as the “Leper-King” because he died of leprosy.

In the late afternoon, embark on a boat trip to visit a floating village on the Tonlé Sap. The residents of the floating village literally reside on houses, which stay afloat on the river and the lake.  An unusual characteristic of this river is that its water flow changes, depending on the season.  As the rainy season sets in and with the water level rising, residents move their houses by boat closer to the shore.  And during the dry season, when the water level goes down, they again move their houses, this time towards the center of the lake.  Since their houses float, movement is not an inconvenience.

Tonle Sap is known to the natives as the ” Sea of the Fresh Water. “  The river links the Mekong River to the southern end of the Great Lake.  The Great Lake was the lifeline of the Khmers as its pattern of movement provided the rhythm of daily life and served as a source of fish and rice to an agrarian society.  B, Dinner with Apsara Dance Show at local restaurant. Angkor Palace Resort & Spa (4-star)

Day 3
Flight to Saigon
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your departure flight to Saigon where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.  B, D Sofitel Plaza Hotel (4-Star)
Day 4
Return to U.S.

Depart on your flight(s) returning home.

Eco Travel in your Backyard

June 24, 2008

Here’s an interesting thought – save the environment and take your next eco-tour in your own local area. Citation for the article at the end of the post.

The Closer to Home, The Greener You Go

In very basic terms, ecotourism protects the environmental resources and supports the economic stability of a particular place.

  • Domestic eco-adventures within the U.S., often called bioregional vacations, leave a smaller carbon trail than international travel, as 12 to 20 hour flights are simply not necessary.
  • Driving to your eco-vacation destination can be eco-friendly, if operating a hybrid or a vehicle compatible with bio-diesel.
  • There are plenty of towns and cities across the country that have suffered past or recent economic collapse due to natural disaster, negligence, or lack of foresight.  A visit allows you experience life in another corner of the country, and helps to rebuild the local economy.

Though all the goals of ecotourism may not be met by every American travel destination, thought and planning by committed eco-tourists helps.

Local Travel Opportunities

Domestic pursuits of environmentally friendly fun and education take many unusual forms…  Here are a few of the possibilities:

  • Is tee time a vacation essential for you or your loved ones?  Check out the list of golf courses that have teamed up with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs by joining the golf program of the Audubon International Ecotourism Alliance.  The efforts of this alliance increase environmentally-supportive management of the lands used by golfers and build awareness in the golfing community.
  • One green-living publication selected ten top eco-tourism destinations in North America.  Domestic places of interest include Yosemite National Park in California, and a handful of lodges that aspire to meet eco-tourism standards.
  • Outdoorsy travelers who are community-minded may find great potential in volunteer vacations.  The American Hiking Society organizes trips that bring volunteers together to rebuild trails and shelters along various trails in unaltered backcountry areas.  State Parks all over the United States participate in this program—view their schedule.  Thanks to a wide variety of different locations, one may be nearby, which cuts down on gas-guzzling travel time.

So many possibilities for domestic eco-travel await the savvy eco-tourist.  This list is by no means comprehensive but it provides a good start for the environmental enthusiast looking to relax and take some time away without leaving a huge carbon trail behind.

Galapagos Cruises

June 24, 2008

As a follow up on my last post regarding the Galapagos Islands, I did some dreaming… I mean research, and found the following:

Sacred Earth Tours has a Galapagos tour, with an itinerary as follows (for information only, not an endorsement):

Weekly seven night departures offer comprehensive itineraries visiting the most spectacular sites in the archipelago on a year-round basis.

SUN : San Cristobal / Playa Ochoa / Leon Dormido

Upon arrival to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, SAN CRISTOBAL Island, our crew is waiting at the airport to escort you to your anchored yacht. After the welcome briefing and safety drill we set sail for Playa Ochoa, where we have a chance to test our snorkeling equipment and at the same time swim with a small colony of sea lions. Behind the beach, there is a tidal lagoon where birds can be spotted including the rare Chatham mockingbird. At sunset, we cruise around Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido), a vertical tuff cone formation that abruptly juts up almost 500 feet out of the ocean. On the cliffs, we find blue-footed boobies, masked boobies and magnificent frigate birds.

MON : Darwin Bay/ Prince Philip’s Steps, Tower

Great FrigatesWe spend the entire day on TOWER (Genovesa), considered to be one of the most spectacular Islands in Galapagos for bird species. This morning, we have a dry landing at Prince Philip’s Steps. Red-footed boobies nest here in Palo Santo trees and Nazca (formerly masked) boobies nest near the trail. In an open lava field, we find storm petrels in large numbers. If you are lucky, we will see the elusive short-eared owl.

After lunch, sea kayaks are available to paddle along the shoreline. Look for the beautiful red-billed tropic bird usually seen in a crevice. A snorkeling opportunity is offered along the inner rim of the volcanic crater. We land on Darwin Bay, a coral sand beach where swallow-tailed and lava gulls gather near the tide pools. Enter a forest of Optuntia cactus and mangroves where colonies of great frigate birds nest. The males inflate their red-throated pouches to attract females as they fly overhead. The trail leads through a rich inter tidal zone where we find a wide diversity of animal life. Swim from the beach with sea lions.

iguana - Galapagos Islands

TUE : Bachas Beach/ North Seymour

This morning, we visit Las Bachas, which is the Spanish translation for “barges”. There is a long stretch of a soft white-sand beach and interior lagoons where we find the Greater Flamingo. There is also a wonderful chance to snorkel here from the beach. Remnants of the U.S. presence from World War II – a floating pier – is found here.

This afternoon, we disembark on North Seymour, a small geological uplift. After a dry landing, we follow a trail that leads us to swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies and the endemic land iguanas. Visit the largest colony of magnificent frigate birds found in Galapagos. As we stroll along the beach, sea lions body surfing the northern swells.

WED : Tagus Cove, Isabela / Punta Espinoza, Fernandina

dolphin - GalapagosThis morning, we visit Tagus Cove, located on the western Island of ISABELA. Six volcanoes flowed together and formed the largest Island in Galapagos. On our walk, we discover a salt-water lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields and volcanic formations. Graffiti dating back to the 1800′s is written on the rocky cliffs. Explore the Cove in pangas or sea kayaks to find Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans and other seabirds. After lunch, we cross the Bolivar Canal. Be on the look out for whales and dolphins riding the bow wave.

We disembark at Punta Espinoza, FERNANDINA, the youngest and most pristine Island found in Galapagos. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory. Flightless Cormorants build their nest on the point and Galapagos Hawks fly overhead. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. A snorkel here provides opportunities to see many sea turtles.

sea-kayaking in the Galapagos

THU : Puerto Egas, Santiago/ Bartolome

This morning, stroll along the shore at Puerto Egas, SANTIAGO (James) looking for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the tide pools. At low tide, catch a glimpse of marine iguanas as they feed on exposed green algae. Watch for great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers and yellow-crowned night herons. Our walk ends at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where we encounter fur sea lions once on the verge of extinction. Before returning to the yacht, there is a snorkeling opportunity with loads of tropical fish.

On Bartolome, it seems like we are walking on the moon. This young Island is inhospitable to most plants and animals. After a dry landing, climb 30 minutes up stairs leading to the summit of a once active volcano. Along the way, we pause to marvel at lava bombs, spatter cones and cinder cones. From the top of the wooden stairs, we can gaze out across the island for a panoramic view of the island and “Pinnacle Rock”, an eroded tuff cone. Down below, crystal clear water is an invitation to snorkel with schools of tropical fish and Galapagos Penguins. On the other side of the Island, encounter sea turtles and white-tipped sharks.

Nature Guide - Galapagos

FRI : Darwin Station / Highlands, Santa Cruz

Friday is feeding day at the tortoise corals at the Charles Darwin Research Station. We visit all three tortoise corals and the breeding center with new hatchlings and miniature tortoises not yet ready to be repatriated. Scientists from all over the globe work at the station and conduct biological research from anatomy to zoology. We also visit the Van Straelen Hall where there are exhibits and a short video presentation. Visitors can now see the pen of Lonesome George, the last surviving member of the Pinta Island subspecies.

After lunch on board, we travel by bus to the highlands of SANTA CRUZ Island. The scenery gradually changes as we wind our way through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos. From June to January, we can find giant tortoises on a private farm in the highlands. We visit Los Gemelos, Spanish for “The Twins”, a pair of large pit craters where we find the bright red male vermilion flycatcher. We stop at “the tunnels”, the largest lava tubes found in Galapagos. Stroll through the town of Puerto Ayora (population: 15,000) the largest town in the Galapagos. Buy souvenirs, mail postcards or kick back at an internet cafe in the social heart of the Islands.

Blue-footed Booby (29K)

SAT : Gardner Bay / Punta Suarez, Espanola (Hood)

This morning, step onto Gardner Bay, ESPANOLA (HOOD). Walk along seemingly endless stretches of sandy beach where you’ll find large colonies of sea lions. There is no trail to follow so this is a chance to explore and you may find a Galapagos Hawk, Darwin’s Finches or Hood Mockingbird. Swim with sea lions from the beach. There’s an excellent snorkeling site off Gardner Islet with a colorful diversity of sea life near Gardner Islet and Tortuga Rock with caves covered with invertebrates.

This afternoon, we disembark at Punta Suarez, ESPANOLA, where we witness the highest rate of endemic species in Galapagos. Sea lions noisily green us as we land on their beach. Curious Hood mockingbirds peck at our shoelaces. From April to November, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, perform their wild mating ritual. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in “sky-pointing” to show off for potential mates. Nazca (formerly masked) boobies busily care for their young. Stunning swallow-tailed gulls are the only nocturnal gulls in the world. Red-billed tropicbirds take shelter under the cliffs. We also find Darwin’s Finches, Galapagos Doves and Galapagos Hawks. Observe a unique specie of marine iguana identified with traces of red and green colorings. Colorful sally light-foot crabs crawl along the shoreline near to the famous “blow hole”. This is the scene most people envision when they decide to visit Galapagos and is a glorious finale to your Galapagos cruise.

SUN : Interpretation Center/ San Cristobal

This morning, we drop anchor in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, SAN CRISTOBAL. We visit the Interpretation Center opened in 1999. Here we gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the Islands. Afterwards, we head straight to the airport for our flight back to the mainland.

I’m a science buff, and many of the groups I belong to, like the Skeptics Society, and the James Randi Educational Foundation, has travel tours of the Galapagos.  Even Scientific American magazine had a Galapagos tour.

The Galapagos, of course, is where a young Charles Darwin visited when developing the roots for what later would be called Natural Selection.  The Galapagos are also of note since they are islands that were not naturally inhabited by humans – so many of the animals and birds there did not develop a fear of humans.

What can I say – I hope I get to visit soon.
